Taking stock photos of the beach can seem very profitable but think twice before spending lots of time and money photographing the beach. There are an abundand supply of beach photos at stock photo agencies and you will be competing with many stock photographers.
This does not mean to not take any photos at the beach. Think of the gaps that are mising in stock photos of beaches. Picnics at the beach for example is not as crowded as general photographs of the beach. People playing volleyboll at the beach or children building sandcastles at the beach.
If you are thinking of taking beach photos of the sunset then have fun but think about how much competition there will be. There are many pictures of the beach and I've actually seen some really good beach stock photos at free stock photo agencies where people can download the photos for no price.
Filling in the gaps will guarantee that you are not in an over populated market. Don't just fill the gaps, however, dominate them. Have the best stock photos available. Make sure everything is lit properly and focused right.
A major problem that can occur with beach photos is exposure. The bright sand can make exposure meters give wrong readings and thus create an improper exposure. If you're taking a photograph with the sky and the sand be sure that you check the light levels of the sky and sand separately and average them out.
