When taking pictures of children you want to be sure that you try to create a specified emotion. If they are shy kids try showing it through the pictures. If the child is eccentric and playful show it in the pictures through the positioning and lighting.
A good idea when taking stock photos of children is to be sure to take the most energetic photos first. For example, if you want to have pictures of them smiling and laughing do this first! After a while children will get tired and their smiles may look extremely fake.
You want the children to look very realistic and authentic. Fake looking children models is very...strange. Get the children comfertable with you and you will get good photographs.
When taking photos of children be sure to have an adult present. This will protect you from legal issues. Always have a model release for children photographs and make sure the parents approve of it.
